Does JOI work in Australia?
Yes, and it was the most surprising result from my testing. I visited joi.com from an Aussie IP on April 1, 2026, and the site loaded straight to the homepage. No interruption of any kind. No age gate. No "you must be 18+" button. No redirect. Just the app, ready to go.
Every other platform I tested showed at least a self-declaration button. JOI has nothing at all. That's notable from a user perspective (zero friction) and a compliance one, it's technically in breach of the Online Safety Act, which requires some form of age verification for platforms serving explicit content to Australians.
How I tested it
I tested joi.com from country Victoria on April 1, 2026, using a standard residential Aussie IP with no VPN. The site loaded immediately. I went through the full signup flow, created a character, and used the platform across three sessions over four days. That covered text chat, image generation, and Dream Clips video generation on both the free tier and a paid plan.
Most Australians will get this exact experience right now. No VPN required, no workarounds. Visit the site, sign up, you're in.
What is JOI?
JOI is an AI companion and virtual girlfriend platform at joi.com. You create a customisable AI partner, pick personality traits and appearance, and chat via text. Image generation and video generation are both built in. The platform has SFW and NSFW modes, and the NSFW customisation is more granular than most competitors in this category.
Australia is one of JOI's best-performing markets according to affiliate network data, and based on testing, the platform works here with no geographic restrictions of any kind.
Features
- Customisable AI companion: appearance, personality, voice, backstory
- Text-based conversation with memory and context retention (paid tiers)
- AI image generation (SFW and NSFW)
- Dream Clips: JOI's branded video generation feature
- Pre-built character personas: Aria Blaze, Luna Frost, Sakura and others
- Voice chat (paid tiers)
- Mobile-friendly web app: no app store download required
- Tiered plans: Free, Premium, Ultimate
Pricing in AUD
JOI charges in USD. Here's what each plan costs at current rates (April 2026, roughly 0.64 AUD/USD):
| Plan | USD/mo | ~AUD/mo | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 50 messages/day, 5 Dream Clips/month, basic image gen |
| Premium | $14.99 | ~$23 | Unlimited chat, 50-100 images/day, 5-10 Dream Clips/month, advanced memory, voice |
| Ultimate | $29.99 | ~$47 | Everything in Premium, unlimited image and video gen, fastest responses |
Pricing verified April 2026. Check joi.com for current rates as these shift.
The free tier hits limits quickly. Fifty messages a day sounds generous, but an active conversation burns through it fast. Multiple users describe hitting the cap after around ten minutes of proper use. Five Dream Clips per month is not enough to evaluate whether the video feature is worth paying for. If you want to seriously test JOI, Premium is the minimum.
Dream Clips: JOI's video generation
Dream Clips is JOI's branded video feature, and it's the thing that most clearly separates JOI from Candy.ai. Worth understanding what it actually is before you pay for it.
Dream Clips are short looping videos, roughly ten seconds each, generated to match your conversation scenario. They're not lip-synced and they're not trying to be photorealistic. What they are is responsive. They generate quickly, they stay consistent with your character, and the quality improves significantly when you learn to write good prompts. One Trustpilot reviewer said it plainly: "The video and photo generation are pretty good, but you have to learn how to create good prompts." That's accurate and worth taking seriously before you sign up expecting polished results out of the box.
Where Dream Clips sits in the market: better than Candy.ai's basic clip generation, a step behind Lovescape's higher-fidelity video output. Lovescape produces more realistic results with better rendering. But Lovescape has more friction for Aussie users (self-declaration button on entry) while JOI has none. Dream Clips are a genuine differentiator — Luvr.AI and Candy.ai don't have anything comparable.
On the free plan, five Dream Clips per month is functionally useless for assessing the feature. Rendering can also slow during peak platform hours. You need Premium to get a real sense of what it does.
Memory and context retention
Memory is a paid feature. On the free tier, JOI resets context between sessions — tell it something about yourself in one conversation and it won't carry that through to the next. On Premium and Ultimate, you get "advanced memory," meaning the app retains details across conversations.
In practice it works reasonably well. Tell JOI your name and that you work nights, and it should remember both in the next session. It's not flawless. A Reddit comparison thread summed it up accurately: "Memory is okay, not great, definitely better than Candy but not top tier." That matches what I found across four days of testing. Functional, clearly ahead of Candy.ai, but not as sophisticated as Lovescape's purpose-built persistent memory system.
If memory is important to you, the paid tier is not optional. The free plan is essentially a fresh start each time.
Conversation quality
This is where JOI is genuinely strong. Reviewers who spent real time with the platform — not just a ten-minute test — consistently describe the chat as immersive and adaptive. One reviewer after eleven days rated it 4.6 and said it "satisfies a niche that a lot of other companions flirt with but don't quite land." That matches my experience.
The NSFW customisation options are more granular than Candy.ai. You can push character parameters further and more precisely. The platform has a library of pre-built personas with millions of logged interactions each, and you can build your own from scratch: name, backstory, personality type. Responses adapt around those parameters consistently across sessions on paid tiers.
One practical note worth repeating: image and video quality require decent prompts. This is true across the category, but JOI specifically rewards the effort. Go in without any prompting skill and you'll be underwhelmed. Spend thirty minutes learning what works and the output quality jumps considerably.
How JOI compares to Candy.ai and Lovescape
These are the three platforms I'd put in the same bracket for Australian users. Here's where each one sits:
| JOI | Candy.ai | Lovescape | |
|---|---|---|---|
| AU access | Fully open, no gate | Self-declaration button | Self-declaration button |
| ~AUD/mo (paid) | ~$23 | ~$19-31 | ~$22 |
| Video | Dream Clips (good) | Basic | Best in market |
| Image quality | Good | Best in market | Good |
| Memory (paid) | Mid-tier | Weaker | Strong |
| Conversation | Immersive, scenario-focused | Fine, not the main focus | Strong |
| Free tier | Yes (very limited) | Yes (limited) | Limited credits |
If static image quality is your priority, Candy.ai. If you want the best video and memory in one package, Lovescape. If you want zero access friction combined with strong conversation and decent video, JOI. For Aussie users specifically, JOI's no-gate entry is a real advantage while the OSA compliance situation keeps developing.
See our Candy.ai Australia review and Lovescape review for detailed coverage of both.

Our verdict
JOI is my top pick for Australian users right now. Zero access friction, solid conversation quality, Dream Clips video generation that competitors don't match, and Australia is explicitly one of its best markets. The Premium plan at around AU$23/month is a reasonable entry point for what you actually get.
The compliance situation is real and worth monitoring. JOI is currently in breach of the Online Safety Act codes. That could change with eSafety enforcement. But until it does, this is the smoothest experience of any platform I tested from an Aussie IP, and it's not close.
